Villain Hitting Online

The century-old Goose Neck Bridge ceremony, rebuilt for your browser: name your villain, slipper in hand, chant and strike, feed the White Tiger, scatter the beans, invite your benefactors and cast the sacred moon blocks — a complete ritual from beginning to end.

What is "villain hitting online"?

Villain hitting is one of Hong Kong's most beloved folk customs: you pour whatever has been going wrong into a paper effigy and beat the bad luck out of it, then seal the ceremony with offerings, blessings and a cast of the moon blocks. Traditionally that meant a trip to Canal Road's Goose Neck Bridge in Causeway Bay and a queue for a ritual granny. Da Siu Yan turns the whole rite into an interactive web app — every prop, chant and step reconstructed from folklore research — so you can hold a proper ceremony wherever you are.

The eight steps at a glance

Never done this before? Here is the complete flow — just follow along once you are in:

  1. Incense Offering — light the incense and invite the gods to witness.
  2. Declaration — write your target on the villain paper (a generic "petty person" is safest).
  3. Villain Beating — twenty slipper strikes until the effigy shreds, chants included. See the chant collection.
  4. White Tiger — seal the tiger's mouth with pork, then feed it the effigy.
  5. Dispelling — scatter sesame and mung beans: big troubles shrink, small ones vanish.
  6. Blessing — burn the nobleman paper and invite benefactors in.
  7. Treasure Burning — gold ingots and joss paper turn to ash; bad luck goes with them.
  8. Block Casting — cast the moon blocks; a sacred pair (one flat, one round) seals the ritual.
