What is villain hitting?

Villain hitting (打小人, da siu yan in Cantonese) is a folk custom practised in Guangdong, Hong Kong and overseas Chinese communities: you write whatever has been going wrong — a schemer, a backstabber, a streak of bad luck — onto a paper effigy, then beat it to shreds with a slipper. The ritual grew out of the ancient White Tiger sacrifice at Jingzhe (the Awakening of Insects), and its most famous home is the space beneath Goose Neck Bridge (Canal Road Flyover) in Causeway Bay — a spot feng shui considers so inauspicious that its heavy sha energy is perfect for suppressing petty people. In 2014 the Jingzhe White Tiger rite was inscribed on Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage list, and TIME once named villain hitting Asia's best way to get it off your chest.

Traditionally you would queue under the bridge and pay a granny HK$50 to whack your woes away. Da Siu Yan moves the entire ceremony onto your phone and the web: every prop, chant and step faithfully reconstructed from folklore research, so you can hold a proper ritual anywhere, any time.

The eight steps, faithfully digitized

The full villain-hitting ceremony has eight parts, and our online ritual follows the traditional order step for step. For the deep dive, read How to Do Villain Hitting: The Complete 8-Step Ritual.

Incense sticks for the offering
Step 1

Incense Offering

Light three incense sticks and invite the gods to witness the ceremony. Bridge-side stalls honour Guanyin, Guan Di — even the Monkey King. Sincerity is what counts.

Villain paper and talisman
Step 2

Declaration

Write your target on the villain paper — a generic "petty person" is the modern, drama-free choice. Whatever you write stays on your device, always.

The slipper used for villain beating
Step 3

Villain Beating

The climax: twenty slipper strikes until the effigy shreds, chanted along with classic verses like "Beat your little villain head…" — every blow lands, every grievance leaves.

The White Tiger paper effigy
Step 4

White Tiger

At Jingzhe the White Tiger — god of gossip and trouble — goes hunting. Smear pork fat on its paper mouth so it stays "too greasy to speak ill", then feed it the battered effigy: fight malice with malice.

Sesame seeds and mung beans for dispelling
Step 5

Dispelling

Scatter sesame and mung beans over the ashes — big troubles shrink to small ones, small ones scatter to nothing.

Red nobleman blessing paper
Step 6

Blessing

Villains out, benefactors in: the red nobleman paper invites helpful people and good fortune into your life.

Gold ingot joss paper for treasure burning
Step 7

Treasure Burning

Burn gold ingots and joss paper for the spirits. Every paper — villain, tiger, treasure — turns to ash, and the villain's hold over you goes up in smoke.

Crescent moon blocks for block casting
Step 8

Block Casting

Cast two crescent-shaped moon blocks: one flat, one round — a "sacred pair" — means the gods approve and the ritual is complete.
